What Is The Solar Plexus
Charka

The Solar Plexus is your third Chakra: “Radiate your power in the world.” Characterized by the expression of will, personal power, and mental abilities, the energy of the third chakra, or Manipura in Sanskrit, is mobilized when we assert ourselves in the world. Discover its key characteristics and how to make the most of this powerful energy center. Location: In the solar plexus area (upper part of the belly, where your diaphragm rests); it is the third chakra from the bottom in the traditional system counting 7 chakras. Color: Yellow (higher frequencies of this chakra can turn into golden yellow). Symbol: A circle with 10 petals in which is inscribed a downward-pointing triangle. Original name in Sanskrit: Manipura. Element: Fire. The Manipura chakra is traditionally related to the element of fire, the planet is Mars, though some contemporary healing movements connect it to the element of air. It has a connection with the sun, heat, the energy of light, all forms of power. The Solar Plexus chakra is most commonly represented with the color yellow. Since it’s associated with the element of fire, it is also sometimes depicted with yellowish red. The most commonly accepted location for the third chakra is at the solar plexus level, between the navel and the lower part of the chest. That’s why it’s often referred to as the “solar plexus chakra.” Some traditions place it more loosely in the navel area. Closely connected to the digestive system, especially the gastric and hypogastric plexi, its main function is to help transform matter into energy to fuel your body. It governs metabolism and is commonly associated with the pancreas. Solar Plexus Chakra or Manipura Chakra is the 3rd Chakra in the 7 chakras system, located above your navel and below your sternum, the color is yellow and the element is Fire. The Manipura chakra is the home of our personal power, ego, self-esteem, willpower, energy transformation, and life purpose. Physically, the 3rd Chakra is associated with the central metabolic system, digestive system including stomach and intestines, nervous system, liver, and pancreas. It controls our digestive system, the ability to digest food properly. The pancreas produces insulin, which is a chemical substance that controls the amount of sugar in the blood. Manipura transforms our wishes and desires emanating from the sacral chakra into action. Being able to manifest those desires results in feelings of personal power and self-esteem. Just as good digestion of food fuels our bodies, a strong inner fire (what the yogis call tapas) helps us digest experiences and fuel the courage to fulfill our desires. From the pit of the stomach comes characteristics like courage, willpower, and self-control. A balanced solar plexus chakra leads to a strong sense of purpose and self-mastery over our thoughts and emotions. It helps us follow our true path with a clear sense of direction. When we’re able to think clearly, we put our ideas into action and generally get things done. Consequently, we avoid boasting and instead permit the results of our actions to speak for themselves. The solar plexus chakra begins its development between the ages of eighteen months and four years of age. Related to issues of self-determination, this chakra represents the stage at which children begin asserting their independence. Erikson refers to this stage as autonomy vs. shame and doubt. When a child’s autonomy is nurtured, she develops good relationships with others as well as self-acceptance. The sound is oh, the animal symbol is ram, the symbol is a triangle. The body parts associated with this chakra are the pancreas, stomach, gallbladder, liver, spleen, small intestine, abdominal cavity, vegetative nervous system, digestion, metabolism, and diaphragm. No discussion of the solar plexus chakra color would be complete without talking about self-esteem - your fundamental power. So, what is self-esteem? Self-esteem is how you feel about yourself. It is your thoughts and feelings about yourself. For example: I feel good about myself. I am kind and compassionate. I am competent. I like my body. Healthy self-esteem means that you have basic trust in yourself. That you have a sense of self that does not fall apart when you are faced with challenges or things do not go your way.

The seed mantra of the base chakra is “RAM.” The sound, when chanted, echoes and reaches directly to the center of the third chakra and activates it right away. You can simply sit in a quiet place, visualize the color yellow in the region of the 3rd chakra, and chant “RAM MMMM” a few times.

The symbol of the solar plexus chakra is represented by a yellow lotus that has ten petals and a red, inverted triangle of fire in the center. The seed mantra that is located in the middle of the 3rd chakra symbol is the sound syllable "ram." Nevertheless, every petal of the lotus corresponds to a single aspect of Braddha Rudra, which is considered the deity of the solar plexus chakra. The black letter vrittis found on the petals of the solar plexus chakra sign can be translated to: Udasinta (sadness), Murkhta (foolishness), Nirasha (disgust), Bhai (fear), Lajja (shame), Krurta (treachery), Dvesh (jealousy), Trishna (thirst), Avidya (spiritual ignorance). Emotionally, the solar plexus corresponds to self-esteem, power, and well-being. This chakra is also where you store your sense of who you are and who you are not. Typically, this chakra develops from ages fourteen to twenty-one. Due to this seven-year development period, high school and university are formative years for an individual’s sense of identity. When the third chakra is imbalanced, it can produce physical symptoms such as ulcers, acid reflux, and diabetes. Digestive problems such as overeating, IBS, and eating disorders can show up from a solar plexus imbalance. The solar plexus rules the stomach, spleen, gallbladder, liver, and skin. When we think of the skin in relation to the solar plexus, it is our boundary to the world. It is semi-permeable, which means it selects that which will be beneficial inside the body and leaves what could be detrimental outside. The skin creates our boundary with the world, and when the skin is having issues, it can be pointing to the fact our boundaries need to be reevaluated. Emotionally, when the solar plexus is blocked or underactive, it can represent itself in feeling a lack of confidence or an egotistical perspective. When we are too attached to our image, this can be a sign that the solar plexus is out of balance. It can also show up as extreme aggression and closed-mindedness. When we formulate pessimistic views of the world, have trouble trusting, are resistant to sharing, or are out of touch with our gut instinct, then it is time to connect to our solar plexus. If the third chakra is imbalanced, you are likely to be a workaholic control freak who never slows down long enough to face feelings of never having measured up to the world as you feel you should have. These feelings likely manifested themselves as a result of your sense of self and self-esteem’s growth being impeded as a child due to emotional or physical neglect. A healthy solar plexus chakra allows you to know yourself and live with confidence and strength. Someone with a balanced solar plexus chakra will be able to set boundaries and be assertive without being aggressive. It allows you to know yourself, judging yourself and others fairly but not critically. An imbalance in the third chakra can cause many problems. Some common symptoms of a blockage include: low self-esteem, inability to set or maintain boundaries, codependency, lack of self-control, depression or anxiety, and addiction. The solar plexus chakra is also important for physical health. It is closely tied to digestive health, but a blockage can cause an issue with other systems as well. Common physical symptoms of a blocked third chakra include: ulcers, poor digestion, gas, nausea, hypoglycemia, diabetes, asthma and other respiratory problems, arthritis, organ problems, especially in the liver and kidneys, nerve pain and fibromyalgia, and difficulty gaining or losing weight.
